iStore repairs vs independent iPhone repair in South Africa
Both routes fix your iPhone. They differ enormously on price, waiting time and paperwork. Here is an honest comparison — including the cases where we tell customers to go to Apple instead of us.
Key takeaways
- 01Independent repair is typically 40–60% cheaper for the same out-of-warranty fault.
- 02iStore/authorised send-aways run 3–7 working days; a stocked independent shop is 45–90 minutes.
- 03If your iPhone is in warranty or on AppleCare+, use Apple — it's free or heavily discounted.
- 04The Consumer Protection Act means independent repair does not automatically cancel your rights.

When we tell you to use Apple
- Still in warranty or AppleCare+ — you'd be paying for something Apple will do free or for a small excess.
- Active service programme — some models have Apple-funded fixes for known display or camera faults.
- Insurance claims that specify authorised repair — read your policy first; some insurers require it.
- Face ID hardware failure — the dot projector is serialised to the logic board and only Apple can re-pair it.
When independent is the better choice
- The iPhone is out of warranty and the Apple quote is close to the phone's resale value.
- You need the phone back today, not next week.
- The fault is a battery, screen, back glass, charging port, camera or speaker — the everyday repairs.
- You want to be told honestly whether the repair is even worth doing.
About the "Unknown Part" message
From iPhone 11 onwards, Apple pairs batteries, displays and cameras to the logic board. Any replacement not registered through Apple's tooling shows an informational notice in Settings. It does not disable the part; battery health reporting may be hidden on some models. We always flag this before we start so nothing is a surprise.
Your rights under the Consumer Protection Act
Section 55 and 56 of the CPA give you a six-month right to repair, replacement or refund on defective goods, and a supplier may not blanket-void a warranty simply because you used an independent repairer. What Apple can do is decline cover on the specific component that was serviced elsewhere. In practice that means: warranty phone → Apple; older phone → independent. We cover the same ground for Galaxy owners in our Samsung authorised vs independent guide.
How to choose a safe independent repairer
- Written quote before any work starts.
- Written warranty — 90 days minimum — on parts and labour.
- Clear answer on what part grade they fit (genuine, OEM pull, premium OLED, or budget LCD).
- A physical shopfront you can return to.
- They tell you when not to repair.
Common questions
How much do iStore repairs cost in South Africa?
Out-of-warranty iStore pricing in 2026 runs roughly R1,199–R2,399 for a battery and R3,500–R12,000 for a screen, depending on the model. Independent repair typically costs 40–60% less for the same fault.
How long do iStore repairs take?
Same-day is possible for simple in-store jobs, but units sent to the authorised service centre usually take 3–7 working days. Independent shops that stock parts fix most iPhones in 45–90 minutes.
Does independent repair void my iPhone warranty?
It does not automatically void everything. Under South Africa's Consumer Protection Act, a supplier cannot void your whole warranty just because you used another repairer — but Apple may decline warranty cover on the specific parts that were serviced. If your iPhone is still in warranty, use Apple.
Will I get the 'Unknown Part' or 'Non-genuine battery' message?
On iPhone 11 and newer, any battery, display or camera not paired by Apple's tooling can show a service notice in Settings. It is a message, not a fault — the part works normally. We tell you upfront which repairs trigger it.
Is independent iPhone repair safe?
It is if the shop uses quality OLED/genuine-capacity parts, gives a written warranty, quotes before working and lets you watch the bench. Avoid anyone who will not put the warranty in writing.
When should I use iStore instead?
Use Apple when the iPhone is still in warranty or AppleCare+, when it is a logic-board or Face ID fault covered by a service programme, or when you need Apple's paperwork for an insurance claim.
